Ahora Es El 'Tiempo' de Chayanne

Chayanne, Mi Tiempo     Chayanne, Grandes Exitos

There are very few Latin artists that can have an international impact and a career that has spanned more than twenty years.  The triple threat of Chayanne, one of the biggest Latin pop stars in the world who continues to break records with his music, captivate women with his good looks and electric dance moves has released his 13th studio album.  Chayanne who has sold more than ten million albums worldwide and has had 12 number one hits on Billboard’s Latin charts including his most recent number one on the Hot Latin Songs chart, “Si Nos Quedara Poco Tiempo” is back.  He has started a new world tour and released Mi Tiempo.   This new album is a perfect balance between his two styles, the romantic and rhythmic.  The Puerto Rican star has also blended different rhythms including la batucada, la samba, reggae and  electronic along with his signature ballads. I was able to talk to Chayanne exclusively before the start of his new tour about his new album and career; Chayanne will stop in Connecticut, Saturday May 5 at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Chayanne, Tell me why you chose to record a variety of sounds on Mi Tiempo?

Well first, I was very enthusiastic putting this album together.  I really hope all my fans like this new sound and the fusions that are on this album.  We have incorporated reggae and Brazilian rhythms within the style of my music, which is pop/rock.  The freedom pop music gives you to blend with other rhythms was something we wanted to experiment with.  As with all my albums we have focused on the lyrical content the balance between romantic songs and rhythmic ones that will make you move your body!

Why is it important for you to have this balance and include dance songs like “Lola”, “Me Voy A Rio” y “Cuestión De Feeling”?

Well I love to move on stage and project a lot of energy.  My whole life I have always recorded romantic and rhythmic songs which is part of my style and what t I like to sing.  I remember when I was 3 and 4 years old being influenced by American rock music, music from Argentina and Spain as well as the salsa and merengue of Puerto Rico, where I am from.  I like this combination and ever since my first album I have grown and continued to have this same balance of music, this album is no exception.

Tell us about the first single and new video?

Well the first single is “Si Nos Quedara Poco Tiempo” which is an emotional ballad.  It is song with a beautiful message that I immediately fell in love with.  The song talks about not letting your life and relationships turn into routines as we so often do.  Sometimes we get caught up in life and we wake up in the morning we don’t even say good morning to our loved ones.   The song is talking about the present, you are here today and tomorrow you don’t know what will happen.  So you need to enjoy your time and your relationships.  With the video we wanted to transmit the images behind the meaning of the song.  I was touring in Chile and we filmed the video there in two beautiful locations.

Collaborations take place on just about everyone’s albums nowadays, Why did you not include any on Mi Tiempo?

Well I have done collaborations in the past.  I did something in Brazil with Angelica, which was in Portuguese.  Last time I did a song with Ruben Blades who I have been a fan of since I was a baby.  I also sang with Vanessa Williams on the soundtrack to the movie Dance With Me [1998] but with this new album I chose to fuse sounds rather than voices.  I also don’t like to force things; I like them to be natural and organic.  This time around nothing happened there were no opportunities to work with anyone.  But in the future I would love to, there are so many talented people.

When you think about your career what are some of the best memories you have had so far?

Wow it would have to be crossing the world and going to so many different places.  I remember the release of my first album and my first show home in Puerto Rico.  Everyone just being there, my family, friends, the people I grew up with.  After that I started traveling all over the world.  I remember singing in Argentina for 60,00 people.  Going to Mexico to film soap operas and movies.  Another beautiful moment in my career and experience for me was when I did the movie with Vanessa Williams, Dance With Me [1998].  It was another step in my career and with the recording of that album and the tour I was able to go to Australia for the first time. Every album has opened up something special for me.

Do you plan on focusing on your acting career anytime soon?

I will be acting on the small screen; I have been invited to do a soap opera.  My tour ends in March 2008, so I am definitely going to be back in the acting world next year.  I don’t know about movies yet, but I love to act.  I usually don’t have the time because I am always doing an album and then touring.

You have had many hit songs.  What are some of the songs that are special to you and that you would want to represent your career?

“Salome” was a song that took me all over Europe so that will always have a special place in my heart.  I remember when I recorded “Fiesta En America” with that song I started traveling all over Latin America.  Every album I have released has had one or two songs that have taken me to another level.  I remember the success of “Completamente Enamorados” and “Provócame” which took me to Argentina for the first time, the ballad “Dejaria Todo” which was number one for many weeks.

What can your fans expect from your new tour?

Well it has a lot of beautiful energy and choreography.  We will have effects including lighting and visuals.  It will include the hit songs that the public made number ones.  It will also allow me to perform songs from my new album for the first time.  It will be a fresh show where I will be able to give my fans everything, the old the new, with a lot of energy and movements.

Being a teen star and idol, How do you feel about shows like American Idol and its Spanish language counterparts?

I think it’s a way getting exposure these days.  The music business today is very difficult and a lot of things are happening with piracy issues and the merging of record labels.  I think these types of shows give young talent a chance.  They have opportunities to have singing lessons and dance classes, which help them, prepare as well as give them experience.  You have to be very strong to be in this business and I see it as a positive vehicle for them to get into the industry.

What are your feelings towards the immigration issues here in the United States?

What I feel is we need to be without frontiers and borders.  People need to have the opportunity to go where they want to.  It is very difficult when you don’t have freedom.  I think we need to have the opportunities available and the chance for them to be here in this country.

How is your family and how do they deal with you being away on tour?

Everybody is fine I am very lucky I can have both.  My children are growing doing sports, school and are healthy, that is the most important thing.  It is always hard when I am on tour, but I have a lot of communication with them and they understand my career.  When I come home I give them a hundred percent of my time on their things and activities, I do not bring my business home.  So for now its fine, but it’s always painful when I do travel being away from them.  But seeing my fans, having fun on tour and giving them all my energy up on stage is what I love to do! I see the positive things in life and in my career. I hope with this tour and new album I touch all my fans in a special way! I am very lucky I can have both; I am very passionate about my family and career!
